Tour de Mt. Puget

May 7, 2011

Mt. Puget is a behemoth that looms over south Marseille. Day after day, it stands as a sentinel. Like a chameleon its appearance morphs with the changing cloud cover and colors of the sky. It looks pretty uniform from the base, but as I discovered Thursday, as you hike up into it there are infinite crevices of rocks and rock formations.   From the “sommet” (summit) one can take in Marseille and a sweeping vista of the Mediterranean.  I hiked with a group of people from my local Club Alpin Francais on a tour of Mt. Puget – not directly over the summit, but around the near-summit.  Up top “brouillard” (fog) rolled in and dramatically swept over the peaks and high rocks, especially ”Le Candellon” (the Candle) – the name of a huge rock that juts out of the ”massif.”
